How to Choose the Right Hosting Plan

The right hosting plan meets your website's measured needs and gives you a clear total cost. Before ordering for a Ugandan business, prepare a short inventory of the website, domain, email and the people responsible for maintaining them.

1. Record what you already use

  • Website software and version, PHP or other runtime, database type and required extensions.
  • Current disk use, including databases, uploaded files, mail and backups stored inside the account.
  • Recent traffic patterns, resource-limit errors and slow pages.
  • Scheduled jobs, integrations, outbound email and payment callbacks.
  • Existing mailboxes and their actual storage, if email is moving too.

Leave room for growth. A mailbox allowance of 50 does not mean 50 mailboxes each receive the full account storage quota. Storage may be pooled across the plan.

2. Match the service to the application

For a standard business site, check the shared hosting plans first. If you need custom software, root access or a different management arrangement, request a VPS quote. For resilience or scaling requirements, ask for a cloud architecture and cost breakdown. Explain the business requirement before selecting a server size.

3. Compare the full price

Record the billing cycle, renewal price, setup work, domain renewal, control-panel licences, email, backups and migration costs. Compare annual totals using the same assumptions. Published UGX catalogue prices can change as supplier costs and exchange rates change; use the current service page and checkout, and keep the accepted quotation or invoice for your order.

Do not rely on an old article, search snippet or promotional screenshot as a current price. For domain costs, distinguish registration, renewal and transfer rather than assuming one price covers all three.

4. Ask for a recoverable backup plan

Confirm what is backed up, frequency, retention, storage location, restore fees and who performs the restore. Ask how recently a restore was tested. A copy inside the same hosting account can be lost with that account; keep an independent recoverable copy appropriate to your business.

“Daily backup” does not specify how much data could be lost or how long recovery takes. Agree those targets for important services. Bulamu's managed backup and migration work is scoped separately unless your selected offer explicitly includes it.

5. Clarify support and ownership

Keep domain and account access under the organisation's control. Agree which party updates the application, renews services and handles urgent incidents. If an uptime commitment is offered, read its measurement, exclusions and remedy rather than treating it as a promise of zero interruption.

Send the inventory through Bulamu's contact page for a plan recommendation. Do not include passwords or private customer records in the initial enquiry.
